I've bought a dvd player recently and am now thinking about getting some kind of surround system. Is it possible to to buy the surround sound bits seperately or can I do I have to have a special dvd player? Can anyone recommend any sysytems?

first question: does your DVD player have an integrated Dolby 5.1 amp? Does it have Dolby 5.1 output at all? what about DTS?

Hmmm, I'll have to look. 5.1 you say? DTS?
As rja211077 said, the first thing is to find out if your DVD player has a built in Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder or DTS (5 phono sockets on the rear of the player probably marked with '5.1 channel surround output' or 'DTS output' - http://www.galesjam.co.uk/dvdplayers.htm#Cons )

If you DVD player has that then all you need is a basic amp otherwise your looking for an amp with a built in Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS decoder (for example http://www.richersounds.co.uk/index.php?f=itemdetl
.php&p=300498
).
