I'm trying to install a game on my PC, but every time I click install, an error message pops up. It says

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

I am given 2 options, close and ignore, and both cancel the installation. Can anybody help me out here?

What operating system is this ? It sounds like it may be Windows 2000 ?

If so PC Games are not really suitable for that platform.

It's Windows XP, and the game has worked on the PC before, but I uninstalled it a while back.

It may be that AUTOEXEC.NT (necessary for running DOS based or 16-bit Windows apps) is corrupt or missing.

Check if it exists by typing "%windir%/system32/" in the address bar of an Explorer window. If there is no AUTOEXEC.NT file proceed as follows:

1.  Browse to "%windir%/repair/"
     (usually "C:\WINDOWS\repair")

2.  Right-Click and Copy the AUTOEXEC.NT file

3.  Browse to "%windir%/system32/"
     (usually "C:\WINDOWS\System32")

4.  Right-Click inside the window and Paste the file

worked for me - you can copy/paste the three command lines and use them whenever you get the problem. I have had it more than once.
