does anyone know how to get rid of maggots from your compost bin? We have had a compost bin for a few years now and this has never happened before, we have only put in what we are meant to but there are tiny flies and tiny maggots in it. its a plastic one that has no bottom to it. if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Flies are part of the decay process an flies lay eggs that hatch into maggots. I think the warmth and recent damp have encouraged a lot of hatching. Leaete lid off and let birds and wasps sort it out. And don't keep the compost bin under the kitchen window.
Or, seal it up all round so there are no gaps that flies can get in through (good luck with that one)
It's all part of the composting process don't worry about it. Do make sure the bin is covered with a little ventilation. The rain that falls on it is cold and cools the heap so it takes longer to rot down
thank you for your answers, they are really tiny flies and maggots so going by what has been said here its ok! Its at the bottom of the garden so no worries with that, does smell bad though.
I know aims!..............mine has a bad smell too!......and lots of maggots!......far away from the house thankfully!.............left the lid off mine for a while!.......the maggots will feed the birds I'm sure!.......be fine!.................
