Is this justice or religious non-sense?
Iran's judiciary has postponed the blinding of a man as punishment for throwing acid in the face of a young woman in 2004, after she rejected his offer of marriage. The delay came in the face of mounting outcry both inside Iran and in the West over the sentencing, which is permissible under qesas, a principle of Islamic law allowing victims analogous retribution for violent crimes.

Islam believes in sever punishments as deterrent. We all listen to one off news in the media and paint a picture what we want to see. And then there are courts and they have legal system so it does not make individual’s actions same as state as OLD GEEZER claims. I am sure if you give OLD GEEZER a choice to choose a punishment or forgiving a person who does this sort of horrendous thing to him or a loved one, he would choose punishment. Islam still prefers if victim forgives (if offender really seems to be regretting his/her action) but still victim has a choice. As for mentally unfit individuals, once again court system should be able to judge that and Islam does not pass on capital punishments to someone like that.
Gandhi said – An eye for an eye would make whole world blind. I am afraid Gandhi was wrong. An eye for an eye makes people think twice before they damage someone’s eye unless situation demanded that and a just legal system should be able to judge the circumstances. In Islam even murder can be forgiven without any “blood money” if victim prefers to do so. In other words even poor criminals have a chance but then again you may LISTEN to EDDIE 51 as he believes himself to be an expert on Islamic Sharia. Perhaps that is the reason he had to bring in an irrelevant topic of rape and a cry of rape. All I can say is that Islam does not need four witnesses for rape but few countries do, due to the “cry of rape”. All I wish is that Eddie 51 does not get done in a country where women would “cry of rape” once caught in act making him punished and walk away herself as an innocent victim.

Kplus you are experiencing UK law & that's why you choose to live here under its umbrella. If same act of blinding was committed under our laws the perpetrator would spend a long time in prison - that's a worse place than being blind.
Ghandi was a lawyer & knew our justice system; he spoke wise words.

Amazing how some are sure they know what others will choose. But the main problem is the culture not the individual, and I'd thought I'd made that clear. I seem not to have again. Oh well.
Gandhi was wrong eh? So fining folk has prevented theft the world over? Maiming folk has stopped all attacks? Death penalties has stopped all murders? One might be persuaded if there was even evidence of a reduction, but that seems not to be the case. For example the USA has a relatively high murder rate despite the death penalty. Hardly anyone thinks twice due to potential punishment, mainly because they don't think they'll be caught. Draconian punishments only seem to achieve anything in smaller countries, and then at the cost of folk having to live in a society where if they fall victim to miscarriage of justice, the consequences are horrendous.

Tamborine – I would have agreed with you had prisons been place of punishment and not a five star accommodation with facilities that can’t be afforded by people outside. Cost to the tax payers, suffering of their families (especially kids) and so many other issues aside. And the reason why I choose to live here and umbrella of British laws etc has different stories. So many British and other Western people choose to live in Middle East and earn tax free income and still oppose their laws.
Geezer – Your example of USA has been put forward many times. And the reasons they are not deterrent are many. First of all according to department of Justice in USA only 10% people are convicted and then more importantly death sentence is served behind closed doors and in a “very peaceful” way. Unfortunately there is no peaceful way when you are taking someone’s life. That act of taking life should be done the way that others should know and learn a lesson from that. However barbaric some may say, but Islamic death sentence (once proved guilty through fair legal system) should be served publicly and preferably in the area where that person committed the crime. Only then people who would watch be deterred as that would be an open lesson to them about consequences and practicality of the power of law.

Kplus, 1. Am not surprised western people oppose foreign judiciary as they are barbaric, from this example of an eye for an eye.
2. Be assured that a western prison for this felony is not akin to 5* hotels. The prisoner would be caged or in solitary after being the butt of bullying/rape & all other violence you can imagine man is capable of.
