The thing I find confusing is that she was supposed to be a recognised great beauty but in the photos I have seen she looks like she's been smacked in the face by a shovel

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. WB Yeats loved her all his days.
Well after just doing a quick Goole and checking the picture I can only agree with Ric.rir infact I think she got smacked more than once
Question Author
Yeats was not the only one
Constance Markiewicz considered her the most beautiful woman in Europe and she was a great beauty too
You guy must be looking at different pix - she looks OK to me.Alright, given the airbrushed tastes of this century she's maybe a bit home-grown, but I'd say this is a very normal looking person.

I'd be gruesomely fascinated to come across a later photo of Gladys Deacon - an early-adopter of plastic surgery that then slipped down her face.
But this Maud person doesn't look ugly or deformed to me.
This new keyboard is my excuse for weird spelling - *guys*

Just googled the constance person Ric - ditto. Just looks quite normal.
However, wasn't 'a great beauty' a euhemism for 'had by many rich men' back then?
*euphemism* hell this keyboard!
I think it was probably that many rich men would have liked to have had her.
Question Author
Well Maud gone did not have many men
Possibly only three and she married one of them
Constance Markiewicz might not have been a great beauty but she is regarded as a great woman and a heroine of the fight for freedom from British rule. Condemned to death for her part in the Easter Rising she was reprieved and after serving time in prison she became the first women elected to the House of Commons (not Nancy Astor) though she never took her seat due to republican policy. She also was the only women to hold a cabinet post in the government of the Republic of Ireland untill 1979
she reminds me a bit of Germaine Greer. I suspect she might have been one of those people who have a mobile expressive face. Some people's beauty does not translate to a photograph. Beauty comes from within....
