Just a further thought-

It's not surprising really that these puzzles (which I don't tackle often) are tough, if not impossible, without Chambers.
Take 'QORAN', for example. This seems to depend on 'OR' meaning 'before', but this is an archaic (not indicated in the clue) meaning, and difficult to find referenced elsewhere.
