What are these cakes called?

I used to eat this little cake as a child, but can't find them any more - they were bell-shaped, made of sponge, covered in coconut and with a cherry on top. I had in my mind they were called 'madeleines', but when I looked them up online they looked nothing like the cake I've described. Can anyone help?

I remember them clearly from your description. They were indeed called madeleines, nothing like the French madeleines.

I also call those madeleines and if you look on google images they are there with that name along with the shell shaped biscuit things also called madeleines but very different.

Thank you all so much! So my memory re the name didn't fail me after all. I've bookmarked the recipe (thank you The Winner for your link, I liked their description of the difference between the French and English madeleines!). So we're off to Merry Hill shopping tomorrow, and dariole moulds are now on the shopping list!

Oh yes I remember them, my mother used to make apricot madeleines, they were delicious!............just substitute the raspberry jam with apricot jam!...........mmmm lovely!.....

You are correct, these are made lines. My parents has a bakery and I remember making them, dipping the sponge in boiling raspberry jam, rolling in coconut with a blob of icing and cherry on top.

To sherrardk, I LOVE coconut pyramids, however, these are made by mixing coconut with condensed milk into a pyramid shape and baking. They are not the same as madeleines.

Hi Sherrardk, No, coconut ice squares are more like sweets. Coconut pyramids are more like a cake, but just sort of made out of creamy coconut (I know it sounds strange).

100% madeleines made them many time during my apprentership during the 1970 done see them much rtoday you use a darole mould to get the shape.
