I have heard that if you put a chalk line outside the door, they will not cross it. You used to be able to buy a chalk pen especially for this but I expect any chalk will do. There are a lot about at the mo
Pour table salt over them. This will teach them not to try and get into the house. They will shrivel up and die.Pick 'em up when dead with a bit of kitchen paper and bung in dustbin !
Swining things !! They are probably attracted by any juicy plants you may have in the vicinity. Vaseline smeared along where they try to get in is good too, or crushed eggshells. I don't know what part of the country you are in ..but our weather is damp and warmish at the moment..ideal slug weather.Once we have a cold snap they will disappear.

a line of gravel round the house, and Hair too believe it or not, though that does make the place look like a crime scene.

They love beer, so the beer traps will attract them but if you've got loads, then a detterrent is probably what you need.  Shaney is right, as soon as it gets colder they will vanish.  Also try attracting thrushes and other birds into your garden, they love to eat them.  The other bestest predator for slugs are frogs.  If you can attract frogs, you will probably have no slugs next year.  A frog saved my putunias last year.

I hate slugs too:  What are they for?

Following on from the answers given, before locking up for the night, pour a line of salt accross the width of the door, you won't have to go looking for them then.
Hi mimififi,  They don't have to be for anything except that slugs fit somewhere into a slot in the environment which is suited for something like slugs to fit in.  Note that slugs do a lot less damage to the earth as a whole than humans, in fact no animal/race in the history of the earth has done as much damage to the world as humans have done in the last few generations.
Good answer qapmoc, I personally don't kill them, regarding my earlier post, copper tape does the job of keeping them out just as well, they touch it, it feels like an electric shock, and they back off.
