After watching the programme tonight about 'Dark Side of the Moon', is there anyone out there that doubts Pink Floyd's place as the best British band ever. What an album!' Beatles? Great, but no cigar!
Not many doubts, though DSOTM wasn't musically their best album...that honour belongs to the album that followed, Wish You Were Here, which was a far better package as far as tunes are concerned but DSOTM will always win most likely because of the strength of the lyrical content of the songs. Plus I have seen them twice and have yet to see any other band come close to touching them live.
Everyones got their favourite band, and sure Floyd are one of the great british bands the like of will never be seen again, but at the end of the day the beatles were the ones to take the crown, and i'm no big fan, it's just the way it is.
dsotm was the start of the end for pink floyd. Their early work, particularly the first two albums with syd barrett are far superior, this is just indulgent. If you want far out 70s prog, you're better off with kraut rock, like neu! or can. and no, they're not the greatest brit band, (wire, the fall, PiL, joy division to name a few)
Speaking on behalf of everyone under the age of 40, can I point out that there are several thousand bands who are better than Pink Floyd? And who are these Beatle people that everyone's going on about?
Aah...Pink Floyd and Queen - the bands of choice for stinky computer programmers with thinning hair, t-shirts* tucked into blue jeans and white trainers everywhere. *t-shirt will say "Same S*** Different Day" or something similar. tee hee don't you just love stereotyping. The Beatles rule. 3 minute pop songs with a tune rule. 28 minute keyboard wig-outs do not.
