I remember years ago my dad and my uncle both had this at the same time. My uncle was able to hobble on sticks but my dad spent months lying on flat boards. I don't remember them having any treatment as such only painkillers but they got better although it took some time. It was along time ago and it was very painful  Hope you are better soon.
Have you seen or are you seeing your doctor, if not please do. I suggest you google 'slipped' or bulging discs. My daughter had this and ended up literally on all fours. She now fortunately is recovering from a disc and laminectomy op. If it is a serious case, it can affect bowel and bladder, so you will be asked if everything is okay in that dept., as I said this is a more severe case.I know ppl who just get bouts of it and are ok after rest and painkillers, ranging from Co codamol. Tramadol etc. depending if you're on any other meds. and amount of pain . Good Luck :-)
I am currently suffering from sciatica horner.  I am going to my Osteopath on Thurs and will let you know how I get on.  I have had problems over the last 15 / 16 years since I had my first child and the sciatica is just the latest.  No pain killer seems to work for me, although I have not tried the tens machine yet.
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/Question136056.html this is the question I put in last week - the answers may help you
My Husband had back trouble all his life. As a child he was diagnosed with scoliosis and had to wear a brace. As an adult it was sciatica which could happen without any warning and lasted weeks sometimes. in the end he was given a laminectomy (this was about 13yrs ago when it was a new procedure) and since then he has not suffered any major problems. His back aches if he has been standing still a while but that is the worst he get's.

I would recommend going to see a chiropractor.  I had a bulging disc and it was agony.  Although loads of people roll their eyes when I mention chiropractors (like they are some sort of quacks), they can treat your condition and thereby remove the pain without the need to consider a lifetime of medication.  Despite what some people say, they can make you better and if they are responsible they will encourage you to go for follow-up 'rehab' which gives you exercises to do to strengthen the muscles and prevent the disc bulging again.  The time has passed when people say that they have a bad back and expect that they have to live with it for the rest of their days.  I think the name of the treatment they gave me was called 'flexion and distraction' and in case you need any reassurance, it is very gentle and is painfree.

What I would recommend though is that you go and see a chiropractor who has been recommended to you by someone you trust because there are a lot of scamsters out there.

Best wishes.

Peri If you don't mind me asking, Did you have an Epidural? (in childbirth) I ask, as this  was the first question my daughter was asked. In her case the answer was, yes. I think I will try and find out if,it is higher in women, who have had it . Good Luck for the 15th. :-)  Sorry to use your thread  horner    :-)
I had sciatica for sveral years, a constant ache in my left leg. Eventually, the bulging bit of disc will dry up and fall off- be absorbed back into the body. But it may take years, unfortunately. I went to a pain clinic and a homeopath. The homeopathy was the most successful and dealt with the PAIN, which was more of a problem than the disc. I still have slipped discs and back problems, but they come and go, and the sciatica went.

Please don't neglect this condition.  I ignored my sciatica,  had to undergo surgery for a prolapsed disc which burst and have suffered niggling back pain ever since.  However, I have acquired a mavellous invention called a Rola Stretcher.  It's a small wooden curved rack with rollers on which you lie.  It gently stretches the spine, decompresses the discs and massages the muscles as you slowly move along it. It has relieved me from constantly taking painkillers for sciatica.  It costs about 80 abut for me it has been worth every penny. The last contact I had for the supplier was ENANEF, c/o Freepost SEA 4967, Dorking, Surrey  Tel: 0700-222-5724.  You can get an idea of what it looks like by checking: www.backinaction.co.uk

Good luck. Hope you soon get it sorted.

Thank you all for your concern and very useful advice.   I find it very gratifying to receive such a flood of information which I will put to good effect.

Good luck horner - hope you find something that works.  Am personally in a fair bit of pain today although its the constant pain not the worse the pain is that seems to affect me.  Hi Jacey, I have three children and I had no epidural or pain relief on my first and had an epidural on the next two. My problems did start after my first so I dont attribute it to my epidurals as I only got them because I could not take more pain as I had pains in all my joints at that stage.  I really dont know what is wrong with me but have it pretty much under control at the moment except for the past few weeks with the sciatica.  So fingers crossed for the 15th.  Will post and let you know.  Sorry for taking over post horner.

No problem Peri - thanks for your help.!
Hi horner - hope you get this a week later.  Was at osteo and have a bulging disc, my calf was tingling and numb at times - do you have that.  My back clicked back in nicely.  Am still in pain though.  Was told it would last a while but dont know how long.  The bulge can burst though and then the only answer is an op.  But that is the final straw so to speak.  Maybe a trip to the osteo might help you ?  Will update you on pain.

Very many thanks again for all the concern and I did pick up on some useful advice.

Horner, for as long as you do the correct methods of exercises, the possibility of getting back to normal is within your reach. Keep in touch. Thanks. Sidney

I know this is an old post but I have sciatica and its awful! i have seen a couple of physios and my doc also. I have also read lots of books/papers on sciatica which have helped a little. The latest thing ive tried is a back support which is supposed to be good for sciatica. Fingers crossed it helps, if it does I'll let you know! http://www.dynaspinei...ort-for-sciatica.aspx
Yes there is lots you can try from gentle back mobility and core stability exercises, good back supports and chair supports can be helpful to (especially if they allow some movement). If you’ve tried different therapies and they haven’t worked, the most important thing is to keep mobile and keep moving. http://www.intelligenttrainingsystems.com Media URL: http://www.intelligenttrainingsystems.com
