Why on earth are those awful drapes at the back of you armchair at grandparents' houses called antimacassars?

Macassar is a type of hair oil - popular in your grandparents' time, less so now, which left a greasy residue on chair backs, hence the protective coverings which have kept the name, even though the hair oil itself has passed out of common usage.
