Up at 5 am. cakes in oven by 5 30 (banana bread anda victoria sponge) most of the cleaning is done and all because the Witchmother general is coming to stay for a couple of days... I know I shall be found wanting so why do I bother?

I am very effective in the early mornings but will collapse in a heap by 9pm at this rate,,

Maybe it's your mum's, sorry Witchmother General's, birthday? You going to all this effort - she should appreciate it & not faultfind.

no its mine...
Aha! The lady admits to it!

Happy birthday Miss Rowan xxx Have a great day and I hope your mum is good to you xx
I have got to the stage in life where my house is how I like it, and not to pass a general inspection by visitors. If they think it's not clean enough they can do one of two things, clean it or stay away. Happy birthday by the way.
First - Happy birthday and hope you have many more of them. Secondly, is this your M or your MIL? If it was my M I would give her a duster and tell her to get working if she is that critical. MIL is a bit different. Personally I have always been afraid of being classed as an interfering MIL, so I have always tried to go the other way. Interfering and critical MIL's have to be treated with kid gloves. It is not fair to make your birthday anything less than lovely. Have your real birthday treat when she has left.

My mother...I had a wonderful MIL lost her the year before my divorce... I am afraid to say I'd rather have lost my own mum given a choice
