S Grade/GCSE English

Hi,

I am looking to do a post-grad in primary teaching. One of the entry requirements is that I have at least a B in my Standard Grade English or GCSE. I have a C so I am looking to re-do it at college or through distance learning. The problem is every college I look at, all they are offering is Higher Grade or A level English. Not sure what to do and I am just wondering if any Abers can offer me any advice?

Thank you, I checked the Scottish site just after Christmas and it said you needed at least a B! Weird....doesn't bode well for a teaching career does it? lol

I taught for 16 years and you'd be amazed by how stupid some teachers are (you used to be able to get into teaching with the worst A Level grades). Hope you get it all sorted out and get on to a suitable course. good luck.

Do you already have a degree if you're looking to do the post-grad? x

I am finding it difficult to get my head around this. If you are seeking a post-grad qualification I assume that you are already in possession of a first degree so I would have thought that junior qualifications like GCEs would be irrelevant.

Hi mike11111, as far as I know all teacher training places require grade Cs at GCSE in Maths and English regardless of what A levels and degrees you have. I assume that this is because numeracy and lieracy are seen as the core elements of primary education. From what the OP says, some require more than a C.

Still confused. If your basic skills are moderate to less, how do you get into university in the first place? Shortly before I went to university it was announced that the major universities would no longer require O Level Latin as a condition of entry. What a pity!

Yes mike11111, I agree with you to the extent that one can gain a grade C in English without being able to construct sentences or spell simple words correctly. I'm not suggesting, however, that all students with grade Cs can't spell or write sentences

Sorry, I already have a degree and according to the GTTR website, to do a post-grad in Primary Teaching I have to have a B or a C in English. I have a C and that was obviously enough for my first degree, but for teaching it's different....although I have now discovered a C is sufficient! Thanks for your replies x
