American Murder trials.

In 1920's New York, how would evidence be presented to the court in a murder trial (eg, plastic bags, held by the bailiff or lawyers, presented to jury etc?.) Where is it put down when not being referred to?

Each item would also be individually tagged with a brown card luggage type label attached via a piece of string. In addition, police photographs of items accompanied by rulers and coins to illustrate scale would be presented where it would be inconvenient to provide the item physically. Does this help?
