I go on facebook very occasionally but had an email today telling me one of my friends has voted for me in a best looking competition or something as stupid. When I click to view it I have to register with the site and I'm not sure what this means exactly. Can others on their then view my profile through facebook? I only add people as friends who are my actual friends as I hate the idea of strangers nosying at me and my kids (who my OH has photos of on there).

DO NOT click on anything like that in Facebook, they are ALL scams and if they ask for your password (when you are already logged in) they are almost certailnly high security risks.
I've had that email, it says something like "see what X has said about you on FB" - I just deleted it then went into FB and delete the post, I don't want all that sort of stuff. I have gone into FB and set all my security settings so (I hope) very few people can see me.
I always delete them, they are just a scam

God I really am surprised by that! Glad for once I wasn't stupid and didnt go ahead to agree. What I don't get is what the scam involves? I was also sent an email to obviously my email address to tell me one of my friends had posted on my wall about it? There is a website about the place too.
