How deep would a body need to be buried in a back garden...

I don't think where it is buried has anything to do with the smell.
As an ex gravedigger I can assure you that a single depth grave is 4ft deep and a double depth grave is 6ft. I found many coffins just 2 feet below the surface but still never a problem with smell.

Dont put a patio over the body, people become very suspicious of new patios especially if someone has disapeared lately.
Are you allowed to bury bodies in your garden ???

I was visiting a local graveyard the other day and the smell was terrible. It wasn't just in one area, which might have been the case if there had been the body of a dead animal somewhere, and it didn't smell like drains.

In New Tricks, the TV prog, one of the older detectives has his wife buried in his garden. So, it must be allowed.
In Doctor Who, The TV program they travel through time, so it must be possible.
A body can only be buried in licensed ground, ashes can be buried anywhere (generally speaking)
But it was on a TV program, so it must be true surely!
you can still bury at sea, but I don't know how many fathoms are required.
