significance of rain in mythology or early 20th century american novels

Title kind of explanatory. But just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this. I've tried looking it up on the net and haven't found all that much. Thanks

in ancient myths, it might have to do with fertility, since people starve to death if there is no rain.

in one greek myth, zeus descended upon Danae in the form of golden rain, and impregnated her

in bible stories the obvious example would be the great flood, with rain for 40 days and nights, and the associations of destruction, god's power, dramatic change in the world

In 20th c literature, it is often used as a mood setter -- dreary, sad, meloncholy.  In a more symbollic work, the author might use drought as a metaphor for deprivation of god's mercy.

If you're doing a school assignment, be sure to refer to the specific books you were supposed to read.
