He studied in Leipzig and Paris and joined the staff of the Univ. of Chicago in 1900. A leading American algebraist, he wrote on invariants and the theory of finite and infinite groups. His chief work is A History of the Theory of Numbers (3 vol., 1919'23, repr. 1966).
