Patio ballstrades
6 Answers
I have a slab patio that is about 5foot high from the grass and quite fancy stone ballastrades around the edges. Someone told me that I should have put them before the slabs and that they cannot sit on top. Is this true? Does anyone have any better ideas as to what I can fix here and if the stone option, then the best place to buy a large quantity? Thanks in advance.

I've never used the stone balustrades. By all means bed them on sand & cement, but perhaps they should be bolted together somehow. They would be easy to push over otherwise.

Balustrades would normally sit on a bottom 'rail', not directly on the slabs. They are normally pegged or pinned into the bottom and top rails. The cheapest option would be for a fake stone type. These can be moulded concrete or polymer, suitably coloured and textured. For real stone ones an architectural salvage company might have them, but they'd be pretty pricey. Again, the fake ones will be designed to make the pegging or pinning a lot easier than with real stone. This might give you an idea of what's involved...
