Shut down or hibernate?

My laptop is on Vista and it boots up really slowly.Is it detremental to hibernate rather than shut down,as it boots up from hibernate in 90 secs, rather than the 8-10 minutes from shut down?

no...i never switch off my ancient machine, just shut the lid. a much quicker process x

If it all works OK after hibernation then no worries, just hibernate it.

I'd suggest a full reset about once a week though.

8-10 minutes is very long for any computer. Have you defragged the C: drive recently?
Hibernating should not cause any problem.

It is Vista though :), which is notorious for slow shut down and start up (to the point that Microsoft got sued by a lot of companies for wasted productivity due to people having to wait so long for their computers to boot in the morning!)

I agree that 8-10min is excessive though.

Thanks for that pointer. I don't know much about Vista except that it didn't last long. I'm still on XP and won't be changing as this old clunker(PC not user) can't handle W7 so will only change when it dies.

Have windows 7 and still takes 6-7 minutes to come to life, slow connection perhaps, but always shut down, that's what a computer mate advised.

Thanks everyone. The 8-10 minutes is probably an exaggeration. It seems like a very long time.
