hiya, i'm looking after a friends hamsters and some days they've only eaten half they're food and there's some saw dust in the bowl, i've been tipping it all out and re filling the bowl but is this a waste of food? can i just top the bowl up with food and leave the saw dust in there? thankyou xx

Hamsters don't eat food as often as rabbits,guinue pigs,gerbils ect. They will often try to take food away and hide it or cover it up with sawdust. What you have said is all perfectly normal,They may only eat once or twice a week at times. You don't need to keep putting new food in just because it's made a mess,It will know exactly where its food is.
As Rac says, they tend to take their food (by stuffing it into their cheek pouches) into their wee beds - I bet if you have a peek into the house or whatever they sleep in, you'll find lots of food. Just top the bowl up when it looks a bit emptyish.

thanks guys, Most times when i go there nearly they're whole bowl of food is gone!! maybe they are hiding it somewhere, i'll have to have a good look tomorrow xx
