Wine of the week!

Well my nomination for WOTW is Languedoc (no prizes for guessing where that's from!) which is available from Sainsburys for £7.99, as part of their Taste The Difference range. It's an expert blend of 4 fantastic grape varieties: Grenache, Marsanne, Vermiento and Viognier.
This is a very complex wine with great length. Hints of white fruits and blossom are followed by flavours of citrus, minerals and limeleaf practically bombarding the palate. Clean, structured and classy... an excellent companion to salads, white meats, fish, pasta, continental cheeses and crusty bread.
This wine was a huge hit with the MIL who said I could choose all her wines from now on! Definitely a firm favourite of mine and long may Sainsburys continue to stock it. :-)

I think the white Riojas are nice for drinking on their own. They're not terribly complex but still versatile in their own right. I'm going to try one out of curiosity! Viura is a popular grape over there and is oftentimes blended with Macabeo, Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc.
I suppose I am of an age that in my real drinking days the choice of wine appeared far more limited. People used to ask for either a bottle of white by name (Liebfraumilch) or Mateus Rose or else it was just a bottle of red. Once labels started to appear with the words 'appelalation controlee' a whole new cork game was started. Big Sis has a wonderful selection of wines - nothing under a fiver and she uses them purely for sauce making and the like. Funnily enough I did swipe a glass of full-bodied red to have with the roast beef lunch last Sunday and it was delicious, but I knew I had drunk it. Whereas I can sit and drink several cognacs in the evening and little realise it. I may well try a bottle next week and re-visit my palate ☺
Actually, TTFN, you've highlighted something rather interesting. I used to only drink spirits and liqueurs (Gin, Rum, Brandy, Malibu and Tia Maria) and could drink countless units without them touching me. When I went out with BJ in Hereford last night, I had a few "long drinks" to start the evening off. The result was that I had got a bit tipsy and anaesthetised my tastebuds before we got to the restaurant and had wine. I guess we all get used to certain somethings and when we try something different, we tend to feel the effects.
