removing paint from carpet

For the first time in goodness knows how many years I've been doing some decorating. The painting itself has gone well, but in spite of putting down loads of newspaper I've managed to get some paint on the carpet. Is there an effective way of removing it - dare I use white spirit? The carpet isn't new, but quite serviceable and I don't want to change it; but it's white paint on a dark brown carpet...Any advice would be very welcome.

What type of paint was it tearing hair?

If its Gloss then yes a little dab f white spirit as soon as poss. Then use soem carpet cleaner.

If its emulsion I'd use bicarnoate of soda.

If its really bad and dried on by now, then you might have to cut it out (or think about claiming for a new carpet on the insurance).

Gloss I'm afraid. And I didn't notice it for 24 hours as it was underneath the paper I'd put down to stop it! I hadn't thought of claiming on the insurance - if nothing else works I'll try that. Thank you.

I decided that I had nothing to lose, and attacked it with a well-known brand of carpet cleaner (which I'd better not name or someone will try to get me banned for advertising) and a scrubbing-brush. It worked like a dream. So another crisis averted!
