I think it's really sad that so many great places are closing. However there are a good few that could do with being shut around here. They just seem to be hang outs for the under age lot trying to be 'grown ups' getting bladdered and acting like idiots or the over age crowd acting like old soaks and looking for a lumber ~ neither of which is attractive IMO.
"we don't have communities anymore, where the local pub was a place to congregate at the weekend, after a hard week at work, and let off a bit steam"

you see em10, we do in our village. but for me this means arounnd £4 a pint, you don't generally go by yourself so its another £3-£4 for a wine for mrs kou, or £4+ for a g&t. by the time you've had two drinks you've spent the best part of £20 and if the kids are with us, a few quid for a couple of fruit shoots and its an expensive half hour.

unfortunately some pubs are being taxed out of business.

Question Author
you are a brummie :)
I have friends who spend quite a bit of time in their local especially at weekends, they dont have much money to spare and she is always moaning about him buying "rounds" apparently he buys her a bottle of wine on entry and then she doesnt get included in the coming rounds, one guy is out of work so doesnt buy a round and another woman includes her two grown up kids who cant afford to buy. They have asked us to join them many times but we have decided to stay away as we are not pub people anyway and though it might seem mean we are OAPs and cant afford to pay for peoples drinks we dont know. They almost moved last year but then he decided he didnt want to move away from his local and she continues to complain to all who will listen.Different strokes for different folks.
I'm not aware of any pubs in my area (North Devon) closing, I know many are doing well and some that aren't exactly bursting at the seams but generally I think they are doing OK.

Dee Sa one of the pubs i went in there was a bloke who was out of work he went out once a week
you would only see him on a thursday night he was a friend of one of my mates so he never got in any rounds.
