Do many lettings agencies / landlords allow pets (in particular cats) in their properties?  It seems that all the ones I'm looking at don't - surely there must be some people in rented flats and houses with pets?

I know some people that have pets. I think it's just up to the landlord. Maybe if you find a place and the landlord is ok, you could perhaps bring the subject up. Maybe they wouldn't mind.
I just kept looking. Finally one said yes.
It's up to the landlord. I love cats, but they can completely wreck furniture! My sister and I rented a house and didn;t tell the landlord about her 2 cats. They completely mangled the back of his nice sofa. We just hid things in front of it everytime he visited, and eventually legged it without him noticing. I realise now that I am about to become a landlady myself, that this is completely foul behaviour, and hence, would not allow cats in myself!!!
Friends of mine were in the same situation, they had a chat with a landlord and offered more bond/deposit money. To cover any potential damage.
