Windows Movie Maker...any help please?

I've got my Samsung video recorder connected to my PC and can watch the videos on the computer. I want to create a video and upload it onto You Tube but my PC says no video device is connected, when it clearly is, and files can be viewed from it. The file type is MPEG, which Movie Maker says is not compatible. How can I change the file type so that I can use it in Movie Maker, and what file type should it be? TIA.

Open Maker
Create a new project
From the Movie Tasks panel on the left, choose Import video
This will alow you you to import an mpeg video
