On my right the old lady is 91, on my left another old lady of 87, accross the road the house is empty, the old man died last week 79. Its cost me a fortune in House-to-House collections & it doesn't look as if its going to stop there. Talk about 'dying to know you'

I live on a modern development (can't call them housing estates any more) that was built in 1994. The streets wind about in a higgledy-piggledy manner, which means that there are no rows of houses such as those that I was brought up in. That means that no house is actually close to its neighbours, and I think that kind of layout has contributed to a lack of "neighbourliness". My wife and I have friendly neighbours on one side, but on the other side of us we have a youngish couple who keep themselves to themselves. So we rarely see them, even though their drive is next to ours. As for the rest of the neighbours (we live at the closed end of a cul-de-sac), well, sometimes they wave as they go past in their cars, but that's about it. So, we have neighbours who are quiet, and don't cause any hassle, but we don't know them well.
I am very lucky here, my neighbours are great and we all help each other.I have lived in my house for 35 years,so I have seen a few come and go.The best neighbours ever, moved away a couple of years ago. They didn't want to, but circumstances made them have to. They were fantastic, helped me so much when my husband died 15 years ago. I still see them as they still live locally..My present neighbours are elderly(like me I suppose-but a bit older) but still very good and helpful and NICE.
