Having engineer out tomorrow but they said if not a bt fault i will be charged £130 quid. What could it be? Have tried another phone in socket and still no tone

Hey Space Chick ... how you doing?!
Check the phone first at the Master socket (where the main line comes in)
That is where further extensions are taken from.
If it's ok there .. they will charge you : (
Extensions are wired from inside master box .. so you need to check cable and the connection at the extension box.
You can take the face off a main box (2 front screws) .. and there is a socket behind it. This is the raw incoming line where he will check it first.
The front connects this to rest of system (wires connected behind the part you just pulled off) Check wires are attached to terminals 2, 3, 5. (3 not so important nowadays .. as it's the 'ring' line .. not needed usually with modern handsets)

hey sweetcheeks! i wasnt going to take front cover off, as checked all 3 phone sockets and non work, so didnt think it would be wiring. Unscrewed box on front of house saying open reach on front all looked fine.
Question Author
plus why would broadband work in line and not phone?
Some phone handsets have a volume control, if yours has got one, make sure it's not set to off. Sorry if you have already checked this, just thought sometimes it is it the simple, almost obvious things that we overlook.

both phones tried have no dialling tone. And have tried ringing from mob, rings but phone in socket doesnt
That OpenReach connection on house .. does it have an output to a master socket inside that you can see?
You really need to test the socket behind the master front cover next : )
'Tis unusual in the least to have working BB but no dial tone.
Question Author
no i cant fipure out where master socket may be

Does the cable arrive at house underground .. then into the OR covered box outside door?
Is that a 'Cable' area? They are bundled together (TV/phone, if it is)
Then on newer houses, the cable goes through wall behind box and to master socket. Master socket may be the split type or have a BT logo on it.
Question Author
its a new house, box is on front and goes under then dont know where comes out. All wall sockets are plain. I just dont want to be charged 130. But then i suppose if in house i could make housing firm pay
If you have broadband, do you have filters plugged into the phoneline? We had this problem with new phones and the phone company told us to put filters on all the extensions and that fixed it!
Question Author
yes I got filters with the broadband. Engineer came today and loose wiring behind one of the sockets so was stopping all 3 working, after lots of emails an calls to the builders they are now reimbursing my call out charge. I wasnt going to back down.
Sox 4Get .. I'm a really busy person some days .. In 9pm tonight .. That's problem with being self-employed : )

Glad it's sorted .. I was trying to get you to find the master .. as there just had to be a loos or disconnected core somewhere separate to the non-ADSL outlet.

xx

yes there was, but because all sockets looked the same and wasnt sure which one was first, didnt think it was up to me to be unscrewing things
