What is the recommended daily allowence for calories if you want to stay healthy ?

The standard is 2000 for women and 2500 for men. This is what is stated on the side of loaves of bread.
and i'm allowed a few more cos i'm breastfeeding - yet another advantage!
ITS TRUE!! My Kingsmill Gold "Soft White" loaf, says that women can consume 2000 calories per day, and men 2500. But what I want to know is, as a woman, if you only ate 1500 calories per day for six months (religiously) how much weight would you actually loose?? And would it make my thighs thinner??!!
