Jake , it might not be the end of the world , but for years now I have had this feeling that the human race is heading toward some monumental event that will completely change civilization.Whether it will be a catastrpphic act of nature or a man made disaster no one knows . It could be something fantastic like contact with an extraterrestrial race , but I firmly believe that it will happen ,and soon. Maybe the Mayans knew something we do n`t
I think Jake has hit the nail on the head.
We have a computer system that we enter 31-Dec-4000 to indicate a never ending date but we certainly don't think that the world will end in the year 4000. That figure is ample for us as 2012 was for the Mayans.
People have been predicting the end of the world pretty much since it started. I guess one day they will be right but it would be a hell of a coincidnce if it happened to be in our lifetime.

For goodness sake Claymore!
You have a "feeling"?
Would you fly on a plane piloted by an inexperienced pilot who "had a feeling" he'd know how to fly a plane?
Go under the knife of a Surgeon who "had a feeling" he'd know how to operate?
No
Because we rely on facts knowledge and experience not feelings.
There are countless examples of people who were convinced the world was about to end from Jesus telling his desciples that the day of judgement was at hand to the Jehovas witnesses (who do it regularly)
In fact here's a small list of people who felt the world was coming to an end.

Guess what they were all wrong - why do you think your feelings are more reliable than theirs?

As far as I am concerned the end of the world (for London at least) does indeed occur in 2012 towards the end of July, in fact, when London hosts the Olympic Games.
Never mind, there is still time for us to escape this ignominy. Apparently the games cut across the Islamic festival of Ramadan and Muslim countries are lobbying to have them moved as it would unfairly disadvantage their competitors, with them having to fast all day.
Hopefully our pandering to minorities will prevail in the usual manner and the games will have to be postponed, hopefully sine die.

17:26 Last night, when the planets were just right and I was wearing my favourite colour, I stirred chicken entrails while looking into a crystal ball.
The revelation I had was that the world would end on March 4th 1957.
Where did I go wrong?
Chakka, you stirred clockwise instead of ant-clockwise,easy beginners mistake, consult your "oracles hankbook" and reread chapter 7!

I've heard it several times myself that the world will end at 2000, 2010, 2012. But the fact is, who knows when will it end. If you'll try to consider scientifically, the earth will die slowly as the sun will die too. I guess the exact number of day or year of the end of the world is not stated exactly on the Bible. People have different point of view, and so they may also have many interpretations of things on the Bible. If you'll take it exactly from there, that would mean polygamy is not a sin because even God's chosen ones were also polygamous in nature. rather it is in the way you interpret the Bible with wisdom. then I can say for those people who are saying the end of the world will be in 2012. Please, whatever your motives are, don't say any exact dates or you might end up as a joke to everyone. Just say that the end is near because of all these catastrophe. Very near. Proof of these are things that is happening in the world - in Japan, in Joplin, and in Alabama. Who knows when so repent your sins now.
If I am to hear that then see the pictures on the article I've read detailing the tragic event in Joplin, I might listen and believe you. Well, somehow it's still good to get insurance for my home or myself. Or I might think of homeowners insurance too. they're part of the preparation just in case.
