Electrical query no 2 - costs of having electrical supply in garage.
7 Answers
My OH wants to do up the garage as a gym. It's seperate from our house though and is the furthest one away in a block of four. I am a bit dim when it comes to stuff like this so could someone please explain how we would go about getting electrics in the garage and how much its likely to cost?

So ours is attached to this block, just the last one out of 4. All 'normal' sized garages and it has a standard concrete floor. Hope that helps hee hee! We just want lighting in there not power. When I say gym he wants weights etc not equipment that requires plugging in.
It will also depend on how your house consumer unit is set up, tiggers. Any circuit taken outside the house really should be RCD (trip) protected. Unless your CU is very recent, it probably doesn't have an RCD on the lighting circuit. Perhaps your ring circuit (sockets) doesn't have an RCD either.
A good way is to take a sub-main out to the garage and fit one of these..........

It'll give you lighting and capacity for a socket or two.
Either underground with armoured cable, or slung overhead on a catenary wire.
An electrician should really investigate.
