I ran a full scan on computer yesterday, the security i have is fine, scan
took quite a while. But message pop up says Windows defender needs to run a scan, is that necessary as well?

"Your backup should overwrite itself, surely?"
No... full backups will either overwrite (which isn't a great idea) or create a complete new backup as well as the original. or you can have incremental backups which take one full backup and then subsequent backups just write the changes that have been made since the original one.
