Southend council have been v/lax over the years, now they've got to pay for it.
I know these are not poor downtrodden gypsy's I've stood behind them in the supermarket queue, and they pay with cash too.

Jem - that is official figure (from census - lol - did you fill yours in this year) BBC mentioned 900 but there are some that don't want to be counted.
It's not a "free" site - they as a collective do own the land and believe they can do whatever they like with it - they just have not bothered with applying for planning permission to turn green belt land into residential

Jem - sorry that you feel the need to be so patronising - I have followed this story for a few years now. I have lived close to an illegal travellers encampment - seen council install standpipes - and seen them moved off - who had to pay the bill for clearing up after them? Also had experience of an official site with shower block installed etc - what went first - the copper pipe lol.
Have also had experience of romanies, who lived very quietly at the end of a lane, with farmers permission.
