I have had my caravan on my own land 1 mile from my home for a couple of months, i came back from a holiday in France yesterday and had a letter from the council saying that i have to remove it asap, is there a law against this?
The caravan is hidden from view and obviously not permanent, so am i within my rights as owner of the land to use/store it there?
I have seen the thread on living in a caravan on your own land but its not living in it i want to do, its just sleeping in it on the odd weekend with the kids and using it for a base when we take our dogs down there.

What reason have the council given for removing it? Have you phoned them?

Lots of people near me keep a caravan on their drive, but someone else I know is not allowed to and has to rent a space in a field for it. They have a local planning restriction on the deeds of their house as there is not much garden and I guess and it pushes the cars onto the street.

If you have plenty of space and its used for leisure, I can't see the problem.
You are entitled to store your caravan on your land..... unless there is some particularly stringent covenant barring you from doing so.

I imagine The Planning Department believe that this caravan is being used as a 'dwelling' which is contrary to any Planning Permission you have for the land.

You'll need to contact them and find out exactly what the issue is, and see whether they are willing to allow 'occasional' family usage and perhaps negotiate 'exactly' what form this will take.
do they kno its your land? perhap someone has complained
Joko - whether he owns the land (or not) is frankly irrelevant - he can't stay in it overnight without planning consent.
Good advice from JtH.
buildersmate - i meant, has a neighbour decided they dont like the caravan being there... and complained to have it removed...not realising that it is the owners of the land...maybe even thought its been abandoned...?

some people can be vindictive when they feel their 'view' is being spoiled.

maybe even someone thinks the land is theirs? perhaps they dont realise the true boundary.

and do the council know that he also owns the land the caravan is on?...if its a mile away they may think he has just parked up and left it there...and not checked the land etc
You need to get back to the council and ask for more information behind this "instruction" !
You say its on land a mile from your house... what use class does this land have planning permission for? Are there any restrictions on it? What does the letter actually say? With more info I can help you. You'd also be better off posting this in Property or Law rather than Jobs and Education!
