Just to add some explanation to Swilly's answer...(I trust you don't mind, S?) In the mid-1960s, the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, referred to Swiss bankers as "the gnomes of Z�rich". This was because they were speculating in British currency and hiding all the gold in their subterranean vaults, just as gnomes supposedly did in caves, according to fairy tales.
