Coco

Lots of you know about Coco and the problems she had when we got her. She's as good as gold now except she's started scratching and biting lumps out of herself. Took her to the vet who said she'll probably always have sensitive skin. What I'd like to know... is there any kind of natural supliments we could give her or anything we could bath her in that would help. TIA xx

I use Dermacton spray on my westie, it seems to calm his itching a lot.

Coco's hair is thick and coarse, would that work ok?

Hello Avril. Oh poor Coco. My newfi used to have 'hot spots' (common to Newfis) and he got into terrible trouble with them. Chewed himself so sore and there was no Elizabethan collar big enough for him. I tried bathing him in tea tree oil to cool him down but it didn't have a lasting resolution for him. I can't remember if you live near the sea and if Coco likes swimming? Salt water was very soothing for Bosun and naturally healing, so long as it was a regular treat for him. I do hope you find something to help poor Coco. Does this become a greater problem in warmer weather for her? xx

My bichon had skin problems and was on steroids when we got him from a rescue centre. We got him off steroids and found the best thing for him was tea tree oil. Got him a shampoo and spray lotion and although he was not perfect, he was a lot better. Definitely worth a try.

Hi Viv ... Don't really know about the hot weather, it wasn't that warm last year (after we got her) she's been fine till now but is driving herself, and us, mad with her scratching, just worried about her :-( She hardly had any hair when we got her and the vet said she may always have an allergy to things like house dust mites etc. We don't live near the sea and if we did she doesn't like the water too much. I give her cod liver oil capsuals but wondered what else we could give her.

Westies are prone to have skin problems, I always found with my two is a dog sensitive diet like wafcol, with NO Additives preservatives and definately gluten free, as a treat they would have bananas or carrotts, and they are bathed in polytar, Which is a hair product for people which has cold tar in it, great for the coat, Down side is that it stinks.

Sounds like it is allergy related so I would try Piriton - just one tablet for a small dog once a day. Trying to think of the homeopathic stuff - will get back to you!
