It's been a long time since I saw the movie, but I seem to remember thinking that it was because he realised that his wife didn't love him (and/or thought he WAS guilty), and, feeling that he had nothing to live for, he confessed to the crime. I saw the "bench" scene at the end as a possible glimmer of hope that they might be able to reconcile their differences.
