Which type uses less ink - Glossy or Plain? (inkjet)

I'd have thought the printer would spray the same amount of ink regardless what paper surface you used.

In that case I would have thought that Manufacturers would not bother to distinguish between the two in their supplied software....
Ah, I can't recall ever specifying the paper to be used. I just shove in whatever is available, matt or glossy.
