If I was young and healthy enough, I would. There are people as we speak going to India to sell their organs in a very unsafe environment. If people of this country are going to sell their organs surely it should be made safer. PS: Having worked in the NHS for 25yrs, I was told that people who carry a donor card are less likely to survive than those who don't - on the basis that one death has the potential to save/improve at least three other lives.

D the D - but people are flying to other countries (from this country) to sell their organs in a much less patient-friendly environment, and dying in the process. Could it be worse if they could do it more safely in this country?
I would but I would worry that my daughter might need one later in life and I would want to give it to her.
sqad, does blood group matter when donating an organ, Imean can Rh-O give to anyone?
I wouldn't just in case I need to give it a family member! (Thinking ahead)
i agree with some of the other posters, how would you feel if your family needed a kidney and you couldn't help or got ill yourself. You can't put a price on it really....

I guess it's all about life balance - statistics would prob say the odds of kids/siblings needing one are remote. However, a young lady who rang the 'Wright Show' this morning expressed doubts about donating, even though her father currently needed a kidney.
someone on the news was suggesting that Students could do it to fund their way through Uni - if ever a group of people needed access to 2 decent kidneys, I think it would be students!!!!
neti....you mean Universal donor? No, not necessarily there are other factors to consider other than blood groups.
Where do you get this info ?

More like t'other way about.....buying organs @ £28k from unscrupulous dealers paying p-nuts to poor in 3rd world.
I put this question already, and someone said why not, its their body, but when or if the remaining kidney fails, then they would have to get another, so does that mean another student who may have donated theirs to pay for the uni fees, goes to the previous student, its barmy. i actually thought it reprehensible for the Doctor to even suggest it.
Isn't there a thriving market in China for the organs of executed criminals? It's hard to believe that they would want £28K.
My butcher sell kidneys for a lot less than that.
this was the article..
Hard-up students should be allowed to pay off their debts by selling a kidney, an academic has argued. Sue Rabbitt Roff, a researcher at Dundee University, said it was time to "explore" kidney donors being paid as an "incentive". Dr Roff believes the payment should be set at about £28,000 - equivalent to the UK average annual income. The British Medical Association (BMA) said it would not support cash being paid for organs. It is currently illegal to pay for organs for transplantation under the Human Tissue Act. The act also makes it an offence to attempt to buy or sell org
lol OG............best answer so far.
Visions of Monty Python's, Meaning of Life.

Thing is it is the poor that feel obliged to sell themselves. I think it is an obnoxious system. If you want to give on your death then do it, but a right for you to sell a body part opens up a feeling for some in the world that they have to. If India does not wish to set an better example, it is no reason other countries have to follow suit.
OG re 1500 - totally agree
