I'm having the meal I love most tonight - new potatoes and cabbage from the garden with grilled smoked bacon. I can't wait.
It reminds me of when I was young - the smell of pepper on cabbage takes me back to my uncle coming in from work, and long, idyllic days at my grandparents' farm.
Do any of you have particular memories of meals you enjoyed as a child?

Is that the one you buy dry in a packet? I love it, but not burnt !!
Can you still get Vesta Chow Mein?
Yes and risotto
Thanks notasyoung....That's me sorted when the OH is away next week.
You're welcome tigerlelly .....
Notasyoung, you've reminded me of the amazing fried rice my Mum used to make. It's strange but I just remember the boring cottage pie and roasts that my Mum used to do but when I think about it she did push the boundaries, even if her curry was eclectic rather than authentic!
annemollie thats one pof my favs.too,i want some please.
Ecclescake, B & M sett Vesta Beef Curry. My mum made the most delicious chees & onion pie with chips cooked in beef dripping.
B &M sell ???
Thanks for the clarification Puss......but who/what the hell is B&M????
Vesta curries and risottos were my first introduction to "foreign" food in the '60s and my OH had a thing for those Fray Bentos pies in a tin, I've had many a bad cut from those. Even now he gets nostalgic about them and have to guide him away from the shelf.
I recall being on holiday on the Isle of Wight and my Mum asking in a bakery for cheese and onion pies. They looked at her like she'd gone mad but she finished up in the back, telling them how to make them.
I remember my dad cooking a Fray Bentos pie in a tin - but not taking the lid off - can you imagine the mess when he attempted to de-lid >

Hi, Slinky
I would post you some if I could!
We followed with bread and butter pudding made with brioche from LIDL, and then to show we are really cosmopolitan (!) runny Brie.
I hate to think of the calories in that meal.
