In my neck of the woods, it's 'duck'. Or 'mate', but mostly duck.
My friends say 'bab' (Solihull) and 'pet' (Amble).

Oh, and for the guys, its chap.
In Bedfordshire, their term of endearment is 'duck'.

Coming from London & Essex, I can accept love or dear (even tho' I don't look like one) - but not duck or babe.
Hun - gggrrr!

Dear - just makes me feel old.
I agree sallabananas - that's why I said 'even tho' I don't look like one', he, he!

An old dear or love - cringe! ;o}
Will this do, chuck?
An old 'mate' from Essex always calls me 'chuck' on the phone! We've know each other since 1952, so she's allowed!

I call my daughter 'petal' or 'plops'. I don't think she minds, unless it's in front of her boyfriend...
Here in Stoke, it's 'mate' for the gentlemen and 'duck' for the ladies, almost always prefaced with 'Y'allright ...'
Further on - the first time we came to Bedfordshire (43 years ago today in fact), I was so tempted to reply with a 'quack' to the person who called me duck - I mean....
well, I'm worse off sallabananas... I AM an old dear but nobody calls me it. More like 'hey, you'.
Question Author
I supose it's better that just an "Oi"
i guess it would depend on who you were addressing, id call girls hen and boys son, but if i were talking to an old lady id call her dear.

then there is the ever popular " wee man " and "big man " which i hate with a passion.
Question Author
wee man? I'd be worried that I smelt like a nursing home, or reeked of incompetence - sorry, incontinence.
In Newcastle its hinny which also happens to be the offspring of a stallion and a female donkey!!!
