jelly crystals in plums

we have some lovely looking large blue plums that are just coming ripe, trouble is they have a lot of horrid stuff around the bottom of the stone that looks like clear or brownish jelly crystals, the rest of the plum is ok but this stuff puts us off eating them, what is it and can we prevent it happening again next year? advise please.

It may just be a natural wax which wipes off - see wikipedia

It's just waxy crystals - cut off that part, and eat the rest.
You probably need some lime in the soil. Do it in spring but no manure. The plums are OK to
