As a beginner to walking on the treadmill how should u first approach as in how long and how many times a week bearing in mind I like to see results quickly otherwise Im inclined to give up... tia

The more the merrier, I think.

Your own body will tell you if you're overdoing it.
I too thought of using a treadmill when it is too wet to walk for exercise but I think little old me might be too much of a sight beside all the young, fit, lycra-clad gym users!
... and that's just the men !!
Just keep on it 'til you fall over.
I'll be heading to the gym right away then jj!
I hate the treadmill - it always feels as if it's going faster than me.
If you only plan to walk, and not run, and like to see results quickly, I would highly recommend walking on an incline... the higher the better.
Why not try interval training. Walk for 4 minutes (fast) and then run for 3, walk for 4, run for 3. Steadily increase the amount of time you are running, but try not to increase the walking too much. It does take time, don't expect results in a weeks time! :-)
