If society gives up on the young members of the underclass who have been rioting and looting how are they to be contained?
Are the words of Lucius Accius as appropriate today as they were in his days?

I guess what I am trying to say is that yes we need discipline and family values, to pull us through. Childrens rights, is a bit silly, that is why we aren't adults until 18 (or is it 16 criminally) because children do not know what to do with rights, they haven't learned.
neti....it is not a matter of the child being frightened of YOU, it is a matter of the child being frightened of the consequences of gross breach of discipline.
What I mean sqad, is not to overdo the discipline as I have seen many a time when I was teacher with some of the parents, the kids "respected" them because they were scared of them.
neti....if that is the only way and leads to a less violent society then to me it is a price worth paying.

On a personal note and i do mean personal....I would prefer my children to behave in a socially acceptable way, than to respect me, if that was the only option.
I know wat you are saying sqad, and I also would prefer that my child is socially decent if if a cow at home!

Nets, I'm with you on that one. I would rather the aggression and nastiness come out at home as long as a child is socially acceptable. Some children are easier than others - I accept that. Perhaps I was blessed - or perhaps it was because he was in boarding school during the awful teen period, until 16!!! I know he was no angel there but there was a lot of discipline - but no corporal punishment!!! Anyway he has turned into nice polite hardworking young man.

I didn't respect my Mum as much as my Dad really. She was the one that did the walloping, he was the one that listened and talked to me.
It's not all the underclass.
A millionaire's daughter Laura Johnson, 19, was charged with stealing 5,000-pound worth of electronic goods, including a Toshiba TV, Goodmans TV, microwave and mobile phones.

Some of these people who've been caught were "supposedly " respectable members of society .
If I was a millionaire and my daughter whom I had worked for and given a good a good home ,education to,etc etc ...did that, I'd kick her arse from here to next week .
People have no moral backbone these days .
I had very little really as a child but I'm damned if I was allowed to put my parts on just because I couldn't have the latest Bunty Comic .
sandy,
I've been watching your comments on several posts. I'm with you in a lot of what you say. I don't think sandy is condoning a soft approach .. just educating as well as punishing!!

Bill, who is the YOU that you refer to in your post? From this thread, everyone on here is agreeing that our children were brought up as we were, with respect for discipline and respecting our elders (and the police). I'm not sure who your post is suggesting is to blame for all this.
Good grief. A lecture ^. :o(

Agree with Boxtops, and what's more it is not an entire generation of kids that have been dragged up, it is the minority not the majority and the minority get the publicity.

A lot of youngsters today are actually far more aware in what is going on around them and more involved in putting things right. They have been brought up to openly chat about things and educated much more than I was on politics and social awareness. We were taught to believe that children should be seen and not heard.

The majority of youngsters will be appalled by what has happened - just as much, if not more, than we are, because it is their generation.
