17D. Silly person chooses to split hairs (3-5). However there are 9 spaces. I have N-T-I-K-S. I thought that NITPICKS answers the clue, but doesn't work with 9 letters. Any ideas?

Nit picker is 9 letters
Nit-Picks fits the clue and fits (3-5) are you sure there are 9 spaces?
Soundes like a compiler error if so.
It must be nit picks. If the crossword is symmetrical have a look at the corresponding section to see which space can be shaded so that you end up with only 8 spaces.
Nit-picker can be the "person" in the clue.
Hi boxy I thought silly person = nit + chooses = picks

Thanks, all. I did think of 'nit-picker' but 30A appears to be RAMSAY (Spoil comeback, for example, of Scots poet), hence the 'S'.
