noisy dog

we have a dog next door which barks constantly, morning, afternoon, evenig and early hours, it is in the garden most of the time, any suggestions, and the bark is a horrible one that goes right through your head, thanks in advance

Could you talk to the owners? Ask them to control it - or if that was me I would report it to the RSPCA - why is it barking? I know some dogs bark when disturbed by noises in the night - not always a bad thing - but barking constantly day and night - thats not right! I live next door to a dog and I never hear it.

Hi back! The doggie is obviously left alone and is lonely, bored, and in need of company. We had a similar thing near to us, the poor dog barked all the time. I had constant headache from the noise - day and night!!

Hope it has water and food.

I can't understand why people have dogs then more or less abandon them and leave them for hours on end in the garden!!! It is obviously distressed. Dogs will happily wait for the return of their owners re work commitments etc - however they would be loved and confident in their surroundings. Then there is no problem. A confident dog is a happy dog. It sounds as if this pooch has little love in its life.

Would it be possible to approach the neighbour? Could you get support from others around you? I don't envy you - perhaps you may have to take it higher.

We have been on the receiving end of a complaint from our neighbours. Our dogs were barking when people came to the door. The local council were involved and the complainants had to keep a log of times the dog was barking. (So did we)Fortunately, the council saw that it was our neighbours who were the problem. I do have sympathy for you though. Be aware that if you complain to the council it is a good idea to have your bark diary ready. The council will have to notify the other people so be very sure they won't take offence. I doubt you have a good relationship with them as you would have mentioned the problem by now. If you are in all day, maybe you could offer to go and say hello to the dog during the day. Poor thing must be bored to tears. XX

Thanks for all your replies, the dog is actually spoilt, they speak to it like its a baby, we did have a word and they say they will try to keep him quiet. This happened before when they leave their gate open and it came in our front garden to use a toilet!! we told them and they fixed the gate, again the gate is broken and the same thing happens so they only take notice for a couple of weeks, we may get a couple of nights sleep then they seem to forget on purpose for a while, thanks again all of you

As a last resort and only as a last resort, record the barking on a tape, MP3 player or whatever and serenade those neighbours via a couple of strategically placed speakers with their own dog's barking at about 1am. It is up to you how loud you have the din.

ha ha ha, willdwood - brilliant approach. i tried that with noisy students next door to us and it worked a treat. i tried asking them nicely (at 1, 2, 3 am etc) to be quiet, explaining we had a young child, work, exams etc. but they didn't give a rats arse. however, after three days of kicking their door in at 5-6 am and saying that i had to get up for work whatever they did at night, was a stubborn cow and would keep doing it until they got the message, thye became surprisingly quiet. the 'nice' approach can only be taken for so long and i reckon a dose of their own medicine should put things to rights. just make sure the dog is reasonably noisy and it is not you being intolerant of it barking before you start deafening them at silly hours of the day. god, is it satisfying...

Have a word with your local council and get advice as I did with my noisy neighbours on one side of me.

thanks for the replies, I will do that with the recordings and play back at an inconvienient hour. My daughter will be doing her GCSE's next year and I definately won't tolerate the noise then and the next door neighbour is a school teacher so if she doesn't understand that then she is in the wrong job, he her partner does nothing all day and it is his dog, so yes thanks will do the recordings if nothing else.

Were having the same problem at the moment. I work early hours of the morning and when i go to sleep the dog is barking and when i wake up it is still barking! We had to put a letter through the door because this isnt fair on the neighbours. Not only that they are alwatys having BBQ's and loud music with a big family. They are very inconsiderate as 2 of the neighbours also have young children. It is hard to stop a dog barking? We are having the same problem. We have been to them before and it has made no different? Wouldnt reporting it to someone higher be too dramatic as they are only dogs? Shame its not just 1 dog being the problem. It's 3 dogs who Yelp and Bark continously throughout the whole day!!

Hi we recently moved in to a quite cul-de-sac, and we have a dog that i have to admit he made noise, the council next door were working on the empty property to fix it up but it was a right mess and it took them 3 months, from 7.30am to 4pm each day all we heard was bang bang bang and drill drill drill, really really got me angry, it really upset our dog as well, he would bark when there was loud banging etc, quite often there were 3 or 4 vans parked outside our house and the workmen would slam the van doors and again cause our dog to bark who was in the enclosed side garden with the kitchen door open so he could come in when he liked.
We got a letter from the council saying they had been a complaint from a neighbor about the barking which from there point of view i fully understand, however it was really the council workmen that were causing the noise nuisance in the first place, anyway we accepted that we needed to calm our dog down and i took a letter to each of our neighbors in the cul-de-sac telling them that the council had been in touch about our dog barking and i promised them i would calm him down, in fact the neighbor that complained also said that the dog barked all night because we left him outside, however this was a complete lie, we never ever leave our dog outside in fact we never shut the door to leave him out there.
I bought a trainer collar i had him castrated and since then which was about 6 weeks ago he has been fantastic both things have worked, if he hears the postman or hears a car door slam then he will bark but we stop him straight away with the buzzer or vibrate on the collar, he will bark now perhaps 5 or 6 times during the day between 8.30am and 8pm for a maximum 10 seconds sometimes it's only like 2 seconds, so basically he barks for about 45 seconds to 1 minute during a 8 hour or so period, both me and my wife were only saying last weekend how happy we were with him and how well it was going, we both hate noise as well and were delighted to get this house in a quite location.
Imagine my shock and horror and anger as well when on Thursday morning when we got a letter from the council saying they were coming to see us the following day again about our dog continuously barking throughout the day,
the woman from the council came in to the cul-de-sac and went to all the houses that i could see anyway to ask if our dog was a noise problem, luckily i had already been to people who i knew did not have any problem with our dog and in fact they couldn't believe that whoever had complained in the first place was complaining again.
When the council woman came in i told her how angry i was about this and that we had calmed in right down and he was now a nice calm relaxed dog, she said however that the person that had complained again said we leave him locked outside even in pouring rain for 2 hours at a time continuously barking, i told her this is complete rubbish, my wife is long term ill and she goes back to bed every afternoon at around 2pm while 6pm, my son works full time nights and goes to bed at 8am and gets up at 4pm, so does she think that i am going to allow the dog to bark all the time when they are in bed, this person is lying but i cannot work out why, she told us that all the other people in the cul-de-sac said he did not bark that much at all and he certainly is not a noise nuisance however she still said she needs to monitor the situation, what can we do about this though it's is causing us stress and i'm not well myself and this makes us feel worse and it's not on, we are keeping a diary of the times he barks and for how long, for instance since Friday morning at 11.30 he has barked 14 times for a total of 61 seconds and that's up to 12.35am Monday morning when I'm writing this by the way 4 of those were in the house not outside, i really need to know what action we can take to stop these allegations, this person is causing us real stress and without good reason.
