How many A/Bers remember the school nit nurse ? it came up in conversation today that it was scrapped years ago. I remember she had this special comb a she used to dip it in a dettol like solution then scrape it against your scalp and it hurt and then she would shout "next" and you were done ! some poor girl in my class got ringworm and had to have her head shaved and wear a wooly knitted bonnet until the hair grew back, I can even remember her name but it wouldnt be fair to mention it and I used to it next to her, so I got inspected by my mum each day on return from school.

Sometimes called Dickie Dora, or Nitty Norah, the Dickie explorer.
Lol at "Nitty Nora" as I actually knew a girl named thusly when I was younger. Sad about the girl that had to shave her hair and wear a wooly hat though, I wonder whether that episode had longer psychological implications when she got older? Then again knowing how life usually pans out I wouldn't be surprises if she was now a hair model for a large shampoo/hair dye company laughing at how back in the days she hated her hair!
I remember her well Dee
and the dreadful stinky stuff my Mum would put on my hair which was way past my waste, to killed any nits I may have caught, them have it rinsed in white vinegar, it was glossy black but I must have smelled like the local chippy..lol
There is a connection here with another thread currently running. I remember a boy coming into assembly with his cap on. The duty master bellowed, "Get that cap off, boy, now!" The headmaster quickly turned to the teacher and whispered in his ear. "OK, then", said the teacher, slightly embarrassed.

my hair was mousy long Bobbi and to dry it my mum used to lay it flat in a towel and put the lot thru the rubber rollers of our mangle as far as the roots and back again, boy that used to make your eyes water but of course there wasnt a magic thing called a hair dryer was there ?
I remember the school nurse putting iodine on our bruises too, they went from violent purple to yellow as the stuff wore off.

Durbac soap that was the name of the awful stuff thy put on your hair to prevent/kill the nits it smelt awful.
Apparently if you spray your child's hair with leave in conditioner the nits cant get a grip on the hair and corn rows are the best hair style to prevent nits.
sorry but my head is itchy now !
