What exactly are they used for, and what sort of recipes/cuisine do they mainly flavour?

Indian cooking, I think.
The Buddha also used them to illustrate a parable about loss and grief.

I've only ever seen them used in Indian cooking - Nigella seeds.. plenty of recipes online. :)

Thanks. Do they 'desolve ' in the recipe or do they stay whole? I have a fussy family, that if they see something odd they refuse to eat - but if I hide it well & say nowt ......!!1

My grandmother uses them along with sesame seeds as a topping on bread products.
