Skin Sensitivity?

Over the past week or so my mum has had really sensitive skin. It seems to be jewellery especially that is causing to break out in a red, itchy rash, even though it is the same pieces she wears all the time. Today she has started getting a similar itchy, red mark around her stomach where her trousers sit. Again, nothing has changed. She has been putting hydrocortisone cream on to stop the itching but it doesn't last very long. Anyone have any ideas of what could have caused the sudden skin sensitivity??

Well she is allergic to cheap earrings and I understand that that is usually a nickel allergy but I still don't understand why it is happening with things she has been wearing for years =s

I think you can aquire these allergies erin. Similar to me wearing the same mascara for years then getting contact dermititis from that same brand and having to seek out a non allergenic alternative.

Quassia is quite correct, one can be in contact with a metal and suddenly react in an allergic manner to it, after many years.

Keep away from the nickel and continue with the Hydrocortisone cream(although I would have preferred ointment rather than cream)

I've had that probmlem with jewellery I've worn for a while - probably as it's not expensive and I never take it off (necklace anyway) even in the shower.

Get her to keep an eye on it though if it's sensitive and now breaking out in a rash round her trunk and face in case it could be something like shingles. Far more likely to be a reaction but just in case!
