WININET.DLL not found???

I'm using AVG anti virus software and earlier tonight it reported finding a trojan horse downloader. I selected the 'heal' option and rebooted my PC as instructed but now I keep getting error messages saying that the 'application failed to start because WININET.DLL was not found'. I get this with both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I can still use Firefox but get continuous error messages but IE won't open at all. Has anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this please? Thanks.

type "WININET.DLL was not found" into google and lots of websites offering solutions to the problem appear.
